Playing Ball on Running Water: The Japanese Way to Building a Better Life
Published in Paperback by William Morrow (September, 1984)
Author: David K. Reynolds
Average review score:

Useful, meaningful, practical, and pragmatic.
The first of Reynolds' books, _Playing Ball_ is the gateway book. From one perspective, this book with its emphasis on practical, pragmatic ways of coping with life is all you'll ever need. However, you may find it so useful and meaningful that you will want the rest of his books, too, for exactly the same reasons. They're all useful on a day-to-day basis. The best part of _Playing Ball on Running Water_ is that there is no filler, no b.s.. It is all practical, useful, immediate, sensible advice. No matter what shape your life is in, this book can make it better. And it doesn't hurt that Reynolds is an excellent writer.

Blueprint for a purposeful life
"Playing Ball on Running Water" by David K. Reynolds is a book that advocates conscious living. The subtitle belays that concept, "The Japanese Way to Building a Better Life." Reynolds takes the Morita psychotherapeutic concepts and adapts them to Western life. The whole basis for this Morita approach is to live life by doing it. Doing it conscientious, with full awareness. This approach is based in Zen Buddhism and it is deceptively simple.

It is amazing that so many of us who are not present and get caught up worrying about the future and bemoaning the past. The book's contention is that we paralyze ourselves with thinking and speaking too much. Reynolds contends that we are not acting on life, not doing life, not actively observing where we are now and not noticing what is around us right now. "...every act provides the opportunity for purposeful accomplishment and personal growth. Every act can involve moments of directed attention."

The author's emphasis is on accepting the current state of being, not letting that keep you from moving on in life, and creating purposeful action. The doing is the important process, not the result. Not having your emotional state or your past keep you from going on at this moment is how Morita is applied. To put what Morita is succinctly, "...to teach students to accept feelings as they are, to know their purposes, and to do what needs to be done."

In summary, Reynolds does more than to illustrate what Morita psychotherapy is with client cases, with Zen Buddhist koans (puzzle), parables, and a clear process to follow. Reynolds gives the reader a blueprint to a life without regrets, to a life that you are fully responsible for.

Rumi's Divan of Shems of Tabriz: Selected Odes (Element Classics of World Spirituality)
Published in Hardcover by Harper Collins - UK (March, 1997)
Authors: James Cowan, Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, Maulana Jalal al-Din Rumi, James Dickie, and Reynold A. Nicholson
Average review score:

A very moving book, highly recommended
Long ago, when I was in Iran, my best friend told me the story of "Molavi and Shams-e Tabrizi." "Molavi" is the normal way to refer to the poet we call "Rumi."

In essence, he told me that Rumi encountered Shams-e Tabrizi at a class Rumi was teaching, and fell instantly in love with him. This mutual love was so strong that the two friends began to spend all their time together, to such a point that Rumi's students complained, and Shams was forced to leave town.

At that point, Rumi began writing this book: "The Divan of Shams-e-Tabrizi." He didn't even put his own name on it, he felt so strongly as one with his friend.

I now discover, some twenty years later, that the entire story is true, and quite well-known! The only part my friend left out is that he rather permitted me to imagine Shams as a young man of outstanding beauty. In fact, Shams was a 60-year-old man of outstanding wisdom (and perhaps beauty as well). Rumi was in his early thirties.

A meeting which changed both lives forever. Before meeting Shams, Rumi never wrote a word of poetry, and apparently never considered doing such a thing.

This small book is a classic which I will be sure to keep at my side forever, and to give to friends as well.

The best Rumi collection!
I love the poetry of Rumi. This book, to me, is the absolute best collection of them all! The introduction, by James Cowan, includes the best essay I have ever read on Rumi's experience with Shems, and really speaks to the greater subject of human friendship itself. I swear! Read the first 30 pages and you will be sold on this book by the introduction alone! This book is a nicely bound hardback, and is one of my favorite gifts to give to close friends and those who enjoy Rumi's work. You do not have to believe in mysticism or belong to any religious creed to enjoy the simple beauty of Rumi's work.

Wonderful!
I loved it! I live in a small town in West Virginia, like the main character and I know what it's like to look out your window and see the beautiful mountains. I also know what it was like for Beth with her parents wanting something for her that she didn't want.

The Best Book That I Have Ever Read!
I think that every teenager should read this book. Beth just displays to me that she is such a hard worker and she tried everyday to keep her family in good health and helping her mother. I wanted her and Harless to get married all through the book. I think that they should make a movie about the book and Beth should be played by Katie Holmes. Hey, it's a thought! Thanks!

Staying on track
In review of A Slim Book on Weighty Matters, Dale Reynolds, Woodland Hills Publishing: I am a foodie and a good cook - and found myself 50lbs. overweight. I am on the road to "recovery". Dale has written a great book for those of us who are in the process of attaining our weight goal and for those of us who are already there and want to stay there. It is written in a cheerful and motivational style. The fact that Dale has "been there and done that" makes her an inspiration for weight loss - she knows my pain and struggle. Her book points out why a healthy weight is a good thing. It gives us the insight to figure out why we are overweight, who or what might be sabotaging our weight loss and most of all to recognize that we are worthy of a healthy weight and can get there by positive thinking. She reminds us, without lecturing, that exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and the key is to find something you LIKE to do. She reminds you that you can still cook and eat well without weight gain. Her chapter on her typical week makes it real to the reader and is helpful as a model for what we can do. The tips and resources at the end are invaluable tools for getting there and staying there. It is one of those books to keep on hand and re-read to keep you on track and motivated. I bought two more copies and passed them on to my friends who also struggle. Thank you Dale!.

Finally! Useful, Effective stuff for maintainers!
This book is the first one I've read that actually gets into the details of every day issues around maintaining a weight loss. It actually helps! Moreover, it reminded me of why I did this in the first place. Thank goodness there's the 'extra help' I need--finally!

Sol Lewitt: 25 Years of Wall Drawings, 1968-93
Published in Paperback by Addison Gallery of American Art (January, 1994)
Authors: Jock Reynolds, Andrea Miller-Keller, Andrea M. Keller, and Allison Kemmerer
Average review score:

An amazing book!
Artist Sol LeWitt's wall drawings are shown in two parts in this book- how they are executed, and the final product. LeWitt's career also includes working for architect I.M. Pei, and coining the term "conceptualism". The book is designed perfectly, and the only drawback is there are no pictures of the artist, or any interviews.

the definitive work on lewitt wall drawings!
Exquisite photographs and an exemplary text that covers the history of Sol Lewitt's wall drawings in depth. This will be a classic.
